Harpagophytum procumbens is a plant native to South Africa, mainly in the east and south east of Namibia. It is besides the capital of Namibia, Windhoek, which gave him one of its common denominations.

Its Latin name which means "plant harpoon" and its common name "devil's claw" come from the property of the plant to cling to everything that touches or scratches it: the fruits are covered with hooks that cling to the animals that carry them to spread.

The harpagophytum is used for a long time by the South African tribes (khoi, bantus...) to relieve many evils, of which the articular pains, the digestive disorders...
